More relaxed - almost ‘Sunday-esque’.

Maybe it’s the early start, the quiet stations, or the feeling that for one day at least, the only thing that matters is the route ahead.

Last Monday, I left Fitzwilliam and headed for the Peak District, changing trains at Sheffield before arriving in Bamford — a small village tucked beneath some of the best landscapes Derbyshire has to offer.

The weather couldn’t have been better. Warm sunlight, rolling cloud cover, and that soft haze that makes the Peaks feel almost cinematic.

Towards Bamford Edge

Leaving Bamford station behind, the route quickly turned from quiet village roads into steep climbs lined with stone walls and pine woodland. As the elevation increased, the views began to open up across the Hope Valley.

Eventually, the trail reached Bamford Edge.

Standing above Ladybower Reservoir with Win Hill rising in the distance, it’s easy to understand why this place has become one of the Peak District’s most iconic viewpoints. The cliffs felt exposed, windswept, and endless. Small groups of hikers sat along the edge taking in the views while clouds drifted slowly across the valley below.

It was one of those moments where you stop walking without even realising it.

Down to Ladybower

After spending time on the ridge, I dropped down towards Ladybower Reservoir. The further down the trail went, the quieter everything became. The noise of the wind disappeared and was replaced by still water, birdsong, and the occasional passing cyclist.

The reservoir looked incredible in the afternoon light — deep greens surrounding the water, dark clouds overhead, and reflections stretching across the surface.

One of the highlights was seeing the famous plugholes up close. There’s something strangely surreal about them. Massive industrial structures sitting silently in the middle of such peaceful scenery.

Heritage Way into Hope

From Ladybower, I joined part of the Heritage Way trail and followed it towards Hope Village. This section of the walk felt slower and calmer compared to the exposed ridges earlier in the day.

The route passed rivers, stone cottages, open fields, and winding paths cutting through the valley floor. The Peak District has a way of making even simple footpaths feel timeless.

Hope itself was busy with bank holiday walkers, cyclists, and pub gardens filling up in the afternoon sun.

Castleton/Peak Cavern

From Hope, public footpaths led across fields and country lanes towards Castleton.

Castleton always feels like the centre of the Peaks — busy, historic, and surrounded by dramatic scenery in every direction. By this point, the miles were beginning to add up, so a stop for fish and chips felt fully deserved.

After refuelling, I continued towards Peak Cavern, better known locally as The Devil’s Arse. Hidden beneath towering limestone cliffs, the entrance feels enormous and almost unreal when you first see it in person.

The surrounding gorge and cave system gave this section of the route a completely different atmosphere compared to the open moorland earlier in the day.

Winnats Pass & Mam Tor

Leaving Castleton behind, the climb towards Winnats Pass began.

The higher the trail climbed, the more dramatic the landscape became. Looking down onto the winding road below, tiny cars moved slowly between the steep limestone walls of the pass. It’s one of the most recognisable roads in the country, and seeing it from above somehow makes it feel even more surreal.

From there, the route continued towards Mam Tor.

Despite tired legs, the final climb was worth every step. The views stretched endlessly across the Peaks, with layered hills fading into the distance beneath heavy cloud and evening light.

People sat along the ridge quietly watching the landscape, while walkers continued along the stone paths towards Lose Hill and beyond.

It felt like the perfect final viewpoint for the day.

The Descent into Edale

As the evening started settling in, I dropped down from Mam Tor into Edale to catch the train home.

After a full day of walking, the quietness of Edale station felt strangely peaceful. Muddy boots, tired legs, camera full of photos — exactly how a good day in the Peaks should end.

The Peak District always delivers something different every time I visit. But this route felt special: cliffs, reservoirs, villages, caverns, mountain ridges, and some of the best views Derbyshire has to offer all packed into one bank holiday adventure.

And honestly, days like this are exactly what NORTHSCAPE is about.

I once again had the NORTHSCAPE™ Essentials hoodie with me — a must have, whatever the weather, when taking on all that the Peak District throws at you.

An unplanned Sunday walk following the River Went — quiet paths, open views, and a day shaped by whatever came next.
