More about movement.

A reason to leave routine behind for a few hours and follow whatever path happens to be waiting beyond the edge of town.

This one began in Hemsworth before crossing into the neighbouring village of Ackworth — the last stretch of the route that felt familiar.

Beyond that, the River Went took over.

It appeared quietly at first, slipping between trees and behind broken stretches of woodland before opening up again beside the path. Wooden bridges crossed over shallow water, narrow trails folded into the undergrowth, and signposts pointed towards places I wasn’t too concerned about reaching.

Thorpe Audlin. Badsworth. Wentbridge.

At some point the route stopped mattering altogether.

The river was enough.

The further the path stretched, the quieter everything became. Distance disappeared into rhythm; one foot ahead of the other, following the line of the water without really thinking about where it would end.

Eventually the Six Arches viaduct appeared ahead through the trees.

Large enough to feel almost unnatural against the landscape around it.

Stone and steel rising above the valley floor before disappearing back into the countryside beyond. Standing beneath it for a moment, listening to the echo of the river below, it felt less like infrastructure and more like part of the terrain itself.

Beyond the viaduct the walk settled into a steady pattern.

More signposts appeared for places further off route, but by then there wasn’t much reason to change direction. The River Went remained close by, sometimes visible, sometimes hidden entirely behind woodland and overgrowth, quietly guiding the day forward.

Crossing the A639 briefly interrupted the stillness.

Traffic replaced birdsong for a few moments before the path resumed again on the opposite side of the road, carrying on towards Wentbridge beneath open sky and uneven trails.

Not long after entering the village, another public footpath appeared — this time signposted towards Brockadale Nature Reserve and Kirk Smeaton beyond.

That was enough reason to keep walking.

Wentbridge church stood quietly above the hillside shortly after, partially hidden behind trees. The River Went soon returned beside the path once again, joined not long after by the heavy concrete lines of the A1 bridge overhead — a harsher contrast against the woodland and water below.

The reserve itself took longer to appear than expected.

For a while it felt like it had been missed entirely until a narrow wooden walkway emerged quietly from the side of the trail, leading into the trees.

Inside, the woodland felt still.

Damp earth. Thick cover. Light breaking through branches in uneven patches across the ground.

Eventually the path climbed higher along the valley edge where the landscape opened up fully for the first time. The River Went curved quietly below while distant figures gathered beside the water, small enough to resemble scattered Subbuteo pieces against the scale of the rock face above them.

Further ahead, the route finally reached Kirk Smeaton.

A village that felt almost detached from everything behind it.

Quiet roads. Stone buildings. A red telephone box standing alone near the centre. Another church tower rising above the trees.

The kind of place that seems untouched by urgency.

After around nine miles, it felt like the right place to stop for a while.

Inside the Shoulder of Mutton pub, conversations drifted slowly between locals while boots dried beside old wooden tables. Nothing planned. Nothing rushed. Just the right ending to the first half of the day.

The return journey followed the same paths backwards.

Same river. Same woodland. Same valleys viewed from the opposite direction under softer evening light.

By the time the loop closed back in Hemsworth, the distance had stretched beyond eighteen miles.

Long enough to feel earned.

The NORTHSCAPE Essentials hoodie came along for the full route — worn properly, outdoors, exactly where it belonged.

CHASE THE UNKNOWN.

For more images from this walk, check out our INSTAGRAM page.
